Reading the grade

The number in the circle is the overall grade given by the auction inspector in Japan. The letter is the interior. Damage codes mark where on the body each flaw sits and how severe it is.

5
Close to new, very few examples at this age
4.5
Excellent for its age, little or no cosmetic work needed
4
Above average, minor scratches and dents expected
3.5
The most common grade, and the widest range of condition
R / RA
Structural repair history. Common on cars this old and not automatically a reason to walk away
1 / 0
Modified, competition-prepared, or condition not assessed. Often about how the car was used, not its state

Grading criteria vary between auction houses, so the same flaw can be marked differently at different venues. We note which venue a sheet came from.

What the sheet cannot tell you

The grade records the condition an inspector could see on one day in Japan. Nobody drove the car. There is no compression test, no gearbox report and no assessment of thirty-year-old wiring. On a turbocharged car from the nineties, those are the things most likely to cost you money.

Treat the grade as a reliable account of the body and interior, and ask the seller directly about everything underneath it.
